What Is CBD?

By now you probably have heard of CBD. It is definitely becoming one of the worlds most widely popular cannabinoids in the health, medical and scientific industries. CBD has been the forefront of marijuana and hemp industry headlines worldwide due to its stunning results.

Unfortunately misinformation still persists regarding this wonderful molecule due to its association with long term controversial marijuana laws. But there is nothing to worry about, and as we dive a little deeper into the properties of CBD you can learn the positive things that it can do for you and many others in your life.

What is CBD

What is CBD an acronym for?

CBD is short for “Cannabidiol”, which many people have a hard time trying to pronounce. CBD is one of 113 or more cannabinoids currently discovered in the cannabis plant. Many have not been isolated and studied as rigorously as CBD and THC however, accounting for over 90% of the plants makeup. CBD is the second most popular compound in the plant preceding the most abundant compound, THC.

Where does hemp come in to this?

The terms cannabis, marijuana, hemp have all been tossed around in relation to CBD. Lets clarify that a little for you, cannabis sativa is the scientific name for the plant and it comes in two different species, marijuana and hemp. Hemp tends to contain less than 0.3% THC and a heaby abundance of CBD. Marijuana has the polar opposite with high amounts of THC (10-35%) and very low if no amount of CBD.

Regarding hemp oil – the term can fit a variety of products but it is commonly referring to hemp seed oil, typically a cold pressed oil derived from hemp seeds that contains no CBD or THC, but very high in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.

So does CBD get you high?

Many websites and articles claim that CBD is not psychoactive but it is indeed very psychoactive, it just does not produce an intoxicating “high” like THC does. THC directly binds to the CB1 receptors in your brain, attaching itself and creating the sedative high you might be familiar with from your college years. CBD however is a CB1 receptor antagonist and actually interferes with THC’s ability to bind to that receptor. Flaunting anti-anxiety properties CBD does directly the opposite of THC it suggests.

What does CBD actually do?

Your body has its own cannabinoid system already. It is called the endocannabinoid system which is why we think cannabinoids from the hemp plant can cross the blood brain barrier so easily. The effects of CBD are 100% therapeutic in nature and can usually be taken along side of other drugs with little to no side effects whatsoever. Understanding the complete endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short has not been fully studied yet as it has only relatively been discovered. We do know that there are CB1 and CB2 receptors all over the body that interact with CBD producing numerous positive effects. What do we currently know about the ECS? That it helps regulate inflammation, sleep, pain and stress response which is why CBD is so promising in helping these conditions. On a therapeutic level CBD interacts with our bodies cellular, tissue and organ system to regulate our health.

What are some of the health benefits of CBD?

Numerous cannabinoid publications from exhausted research are now flooding the web and we now know CBD can be used to treat a whole host of symtoms including but not limited to…

  • Nervousness
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Pain
  • Muscle Spasms

This is only the start. CBD is truly an all-encompassing solution. CBD has even been shown to help people with addictive natures going through withdrawal symptoms from alcohol, prescription drugs, tobacco and deadly opiates. While these exact mechanisms are still unknown it is believed to help regulate dopamine and serotonin production during these hard times.
